Other student discussion:
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values. It is a process that healthcare professionals use to make decisions about patient care. The goal of EBP is to provide the best possible care for patients, while also being mindful of the resources available. There are many benefits to using EBP in healthcare. First, it can help to improve the quality of care. When healthcare professionals use the best available evidence, they are more likely to make decisions that are in the best interests of their patients. Second, EBP can help to reduce healthcare costs. By identifying and addressing the factors that contribute to prolonged LOS, healthcare providers can improve the efficiency of their care delivery systems (Nursing – Research Guides at Lansing Community College Library)
In my review of the literature, I have found that there are a number of clinical and non-clinical factors that can contribute to prolonged LOS in patients undergoing outpatient primary knee arthroscopy surgery. Some of the clinical factors include:
Clinical Factors:
Post-operative pain: Severe pain after surgery often requires additional time in the PACU for management, thus extending LOS.
Surgical complications: Infections, bleeding, or adverse reactions to anesthesia can all lead to prolonged LOS.
Co-existing medical conditions: Patients with other health issues (like diabetes, hypertension, etc.) may require longer hospital stays for monitoring and managing these conditions (Saengpetch, 2022)
Non-clinical factors include:
The availability of resources, such as beds and staff
The patient’s insurance status
The patient’s personal preferences (transportation, companions, pharmacy selected, follow op appointments) (Piuzzi,2019).
Understanding the factors that contribute to prolonged LOS can help healthcare providers develop strategies to minimize LOS, optimize patient care, and reduce healthcare costs. For example, healthcare providers can develop protocols for managing patients with complex needs or for identifying patients who are at risk for prolonged LOS. They can also work with insurance companies to ensure that patients have access to the care they need.
I believe that EBP is an important tool for improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare. By using the best available evidence, healthcare professionals can make decisions that are in the best interests of their patients and that help to reduce healthcare costs.
