LAVC Feminism Voice Demands Paper – Description

This week’s readings and films give you introductory exposure to feminist voices from different eras. Some of our authors demand women’s rights (to vote, to seek an education, to abortion, choice, etc.), while others demand different ways of thinking about gender and/in society. Even others de-center ideas of gender as a binary all together, challenging intergenerational gender-based traumas (Vaid-Menon), and envisioning new ways of relating to the world and to one another (Lorde).
In part 1 of this last response paper, I want you to zoom in on the ideas of Mary Wollstonecraft, Sor Juana de La Cruz, and Audre Lorde. Compare and contrast some of the key demands each person is making in their writings in relation to feminism/women. Try to lift up 2-3 points made by each person in your comparison. What logic does each author use to fight against misogyny and oppression? Be sure to spend at least 1 paragraph on each author. (total 8 points) (Note: before you begin this assignment, be sure to look up the time period and context (e.g. Mexico/church/17th century) in which each person’s views are being expressed as the context is crucial to understanding the thrust of each person’s views)
In Part 2, share your key understandings of some key points Alok Vaid Menon’s video makes in terms of gender-based oppression and the binary. What is your response to this creative piece? (2 points – one 6 line paragraph at minimum)
