Lake Sumter State College Economic Development and Growth Discussion Reply – Description

Hi Thanks for you helpPost #1Leticia DeRooA-G: In this week’s discussion I will be discussing how the constantly changing of healthcare financing in the U.S. has adversely affected the delivery of public health services. To give you a little back information, until the mid 1800s medical services were not given properly unless you were wealthy and could afford a private physician. Now there are many different programs that offer health care services depending on your needs and financial situation. The government has been changing and adapting different programs for years to try to help with people of all populations to be able to obtain proper health care services because according to Rector, (pg. 137) public health policies and programs promote health which directly affect economic development and growth. A nation of a healthy population has better worker productivity and longer life expectancies which then provides and incentive for investment of education and innovation. For many years people had difficult times trying to get proper health care coverage and education due to financial burden or pre-existing medical history, in 2010 the government passed the Affordable Care Act which was created to be more consumer friendly and more cost efficient for the population. Unfortunately, now yes, it’s easier to get health care coverage its cost has once again become difficult to afford even though it is supposed to be based off of income. The current evolving and changing health economics has been drastically changed. According to Rector (pg. 159) The trend of diminished federal and state allocations has had profound effects on community/public health programs, and severe budget cuts have affected even basic public health services, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. In my opinion health care services are not given to our patients properly, it is still dependent on financial circumstances. Working in the emergency department I see it quit frequently how a patient with no or little insurance will have a more difficult time to find follow up care after leaving the department because they can’t afford to pay out of pocket to see a primary physician and the community health departments are so overly populated with patients it is difficult to even get in to see a provider. The new “emphasis has shifted to a focus on health promotion and population health” in order to manage “care focused on event-driven cost avoidance (e.g. decreasing inpatient days and specialty physician use, using physician extenders)” (Rector 159).Rector, C., & Stanley, M.J. Wolters Kluwer.Post # 2Kimberly MaldonadoH-M: Apply the epidemiologic triangle (host, agent, and environment) to the COVID-19 pandemic. What public health strategies were used to disrupt or strengthen the components of the epidemiologic triangle?                Epidemiology is not new, as it dates back to the 5th Century B.C. This scientific discipline inquires how disease occurs and helps develop acceptable methods to control them. The epidemiologic triangle model was developed over Centuries of developing strategies to control diseases. Rector & Stanley (2022) explain how epidemiologists started looking at infectious disease elements such as the host, agent, and environment, making up the epidemiologic triangle (pg. 181). Infectious disease patterns correlate with the interactions found between these three elements.                During the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone had their opinions regarding the severity, how it is spread, and how to prevent the spread of the disease. Some took it to the extreme, while others took no precautions. The infectious rate was initially higher in more populated urban areas due to the proximity. COVID-19 is known to be spread by an infectious person (host) by breathing out particles of the virus (agent) through droplets; others breathe them in and contract the virus. The disease can also be on surfaces (environment) where the infected person came in contact. Public Health Authorities, such as the CDC, recommended and implemented strategies to stop the spread of COVID-19.                Mitigation strategies involved individual behaviors such as wearing a mask, washing hands thoroughly, and avoiding large gatherings. These strategies also included public health actions such as closing schools, keeping all non-essential workers and the elderly at home (Beck, et al, 2022). The public health strategies of keeping everyone separated as much as possible strengthened the environmental component of the epidemiologic triangle in that guaranteeing when sick helped prevent the spread of the disease further. All strategies are a moot point if the population does not follow the guidelines to keep everyone safe.ReferencesBeck, A. M., Piontek, A. J., Wiedenman, E. M. & Gilbert, A. (2022).
