I remember having this experience is grade school growing up. At first because of my parents divorce I was not attending classes and performing poorly on tests due to stress and not having time to study. I’m a firm believer in having the right teacher putting the right amount of effort at the right time. For this thus teacher was my Home Economics teacher she helped me after school. My grades improved not only form the extra tutoring but she gave me an outlet to relive some of the stress I was experiencing at home. I made baby mobiles, and book marks out of yarn and plastic canvases. To learning to slip stitch pillows and stuff them to make pillowcases. I was great with a sewing machine and I didn’t even know it because I wasn’t given the opportunity at home. All the awards I had won in Home Economics and English Composition class shocked my father just like it shocked the mother in the article on page 417 in our book. Grade skipping can change everything and it did for me. I was held back for not testing well and not attending school and I was being bullied for it. But once my grades were right I was able to skip ahead not just to be on grade level, but further. I had tested to be on a college level for reading by the 8th grade. Like gifted students in general they exhibit great variability and diversity in their behaviors, interests, and abilities. Defining underachievement in gifted students can be difficult to find the link between the operational and the conceptional definitions needed to determine if the students is eligible for grade skipping. (Reis & McCoach, 200) It’s important for the student to decide if it’s best for them not the parent. The student needs to feel comfortable with the new grade and the new work load associated with the upgrade. This is a phenomenon that needs to be explored to design a way to bring out the best in every student.
