Keiser University Changes that have occurred to bring about the evolution of our society – Description
PART 1
In chapter one, Dolgin, (2018), our textbook’s author, outlines many changes that have occurred to bring about the evolution of our society. Discuss this evolution in your post this week. What do you think about how this evolution has brought about change to adolescents in our society, and/or maybe in your own life?

PART 2 RESPOND TO TWO PEERS
Good afternoon class!
There are many things that have influenced our society, our text mentions that for the previous millennial generation, 9/11 had a big impact on how American children and more importantly their parents felt about this “new” unsafe world (Dolgin, 2018). When it comes to American children some of the most impactful developments have been the ease of immigration and diversity of backgrounds that continually change the American landscape (for the better in my opinion), the explosive advancements of technologies that current generations could not imagine living without, and the mass number of violent and terroristic attacks on American soil. The expansion and growth of social media have definitely brought new psychological factors and change to our current youth by giving us the “look at me” mentality of oversharing every detail about one’s life online in order to gain an audience and find approval within peers. This, in turn, has made the youth more aware of their own image and values. Diversity is something that brings about change and better ideas due to diverse and unique minds working together to find and create new solutions for current problems around the world, but for some reason, politicians seem to label the word “immigrant” as a bad thing when this entire country was based upon that idea. Another big impact that 9/11 has had on our youth is that since that point it feels like we have become very desensitized to tragedy since it happens every day. Though it may seem heartless, it is the youth’s way of dealing with so many negative emotions from local and national news. One, if not, the most impactful change that occurred during my adolescence was moving to the United States in order to find better opportunities for our family. My father was lucky enough to be able to take us out of the country due to work, but it meant leaving my entire family behind and jumping headfirst into a country in which I did not even know the language.

PEERS 2
Adolescence today live in a world undergoing rapid technological changes. Arguably no other era has seen such an explosion in technological innovation. During the past 100 or so years, humans have witnessed unprececedented advance: the introduction of radio, television, automobile, airplanes, and satelite communication (Dolgin, K. 2018). I can only remeber back when I was a adolescence in the 1980’s. Technology has caused society to spend more time alone than interacting with others. This does not mean that formal structures are exclusively the result of a process of social transmission. We still have to consider the spontaneous and endogenous factors of construction proper to each normal subject. However, the formation and completion of cognitive structures imply a whole series of exchanges and a stimulating environment; the formation of operations always requires a favorable environment for ‘cooperation’, that is to say, operations carried out in common (e.g., the role of discussion, mutual criticism or support, problems raised as the result of exchanges of information, heightened curiosity due to the cultural influence of a social group, etc.) Piaget, J. (2008). It seems that this could be considered the information era, due to the extensive research that’s available by the touch of a button. Adolescence have became anti-social due to the multiple devices that’s so easy to come across in reference to communicating.
As outlined above, traditional media impact youth substance use in part through shaping social normative beliefs; social media add unique opportunities to gather normative information. When adolescents interact with social media, the line between media messages and peer messages is increasingly blurred as marketers’ messages may be transmitted through peer-to-peer channels (Griffiths & Casswell, 2010 as cited by Elmore KC et al., 2017). In addition, adolescents’ efforts to curate their online identities in socially desirable ways lead many to post their own images and experiences related to alcohol use (Ridout, Campbell, & Ellis, 2012 as cited by Elmore KC, et al., 2017). The evolving of the media has gave adolescence the opportunity to endulge in so many different activities due to technology. From the social point of view, there is also an important conquest. Firstly, hypothetical reasoning changes the nature of discussions: a fruitful and constructive discussion means that by using hypotheses we can adopt the point of view of the adversary (although not necessarily believing it) and draw the logical consequences it implies. In this way, we can judge its value after having verified the consequences (Piaget, J. 2008).

PART 3
Writing a Critical Review–Adolescents and the Internet
It will be beneficial for you to read Chapter 1 pages 9-12 for this assignment. In this assignment, you will be writing a critical review on an article related to the topic in the reading.
You might want to find an article that discusses some of the advantages and disadvantages of the ease of Internet access for adolescents. Some interesting questions to consider are: What limitations do you think should be placed on a teenager who uses the Internet? How has the Internet changed life for today’s teens?
Find a research article that addresses adolescents and the Internet by browsing our Keiser Library’s online journal articles or other scholarly resources.
**Next, you will write a critical review of a scholarly article following the “Critical Review” directions, which are posted following the grading rubric information. PLEASE follow the example in these directions!
*Remember to write a good summary of the article as well as answering the “Who, What, When, Where and How” topic questions presented.
Critical Review Directions
You have been asked to find a scholarly article from a trusted resource and provide a critical review of the article along with a summary. You will critically review your research.
In our society today, we are exposed to so much information and so many studies. Some of this information is excellent, some is useful, and some is very bad and unreliable.
Critical thinking involves asking five questions: who, what, when, where, and how. Your review will need to include these 5 questions PLUS a paragraph summary of your own thoughts about the article.
Below is an example of what your write-up needs to include.
———————————————————————————-
You should organize your paper in the following manner:
Your name
Provide your article citation in APA format. (Please refer to the Student Resources or Writing Help, if you need APA help with APA citations and formatting.
For example for a research article from a journal: Author’s name. (Date). Title of article. Name of the Journal Publication, volume#, page #.
From a website: Author’s name, (date of publication if available). Title of article. Retrieved [date accessed] from the World Wide Web: [Web site address]
Where: In this section you will describe where you found the article. Where did this article/Web page appear? Is this a reasonable or credible journal or website? Is the publishing entity respectable/responsible?
Who: Who wrote/published the article/Web page? What are their credentials? Are the credentials appropriate for their argument?
When: Is this current information? If yes, do you think it will stand the “test of time”? If no, is it outdated or is it classic?
What: What argument is/are the author(s) making? Is it logical? Based on what you know, is it reasonable? What evidence is given to support the argument? Can you think of evidence to refute it?
How: How was the supporting/refuting evidence collected? Is this credible? What kind of evidence do you think needs to be gathered to test the argument? Did the author(s) do this? Remember that in the “how” section you will summarize the quality of the article (it does not have to be a “good” article in your opinion), and whether you consider this to be a worthwhile and trustworthy article. Did you think it was biased? Could the author have underlying motives? What do you think? Is it valid?
Summary: In this section you will think about the questions posed in your assignment for the critical review topic. What are your own thoughts? What did you learn from the article?
NOTE: Do not simply answer yes or no to the questions above. Write a thoughtful response to each section.
Here is a SAMPLE CRITICAL REVIEW: and how your paper should look:
Student Name: Critical Review: Week Number
Name of the author, date, and the resource (APA citation of the article):
Eggenberger, T. Sentinel node biopsy. Retrieved August 30, 2001, from the World Wide Web: http://www.intellihealth.com/IH/ihtIH/WSIHW000/910…
Where: The Intellihealth Web site is a general information health Web site. It draws information from “trusted sources” (e.g., Harvard Medical School, University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine); however, it sells health products and is financed by an insurance company. They do not endorse specific products. In general, the information on this site should be viewed with caution but may be an appropriate first step.
Who: Ty Eggenberger, a correspondent for Intellihealth. No evidence is given for the author’s credentials, but the Web site indicates that the editors are experts and use trusted sources.
When: Although the site was last updated 8/27/01, there is no indication when the article was written. It appears to be current, but this cannot be evaluated.
What: This article reviews a new diagnostic procedure, sentinel node biopsy, for breast cancer. They suggest that women investigate this option, but caution that the surgeon’s experience level is associated with diagnostic accuracy. The information is supported with quotations from a surgeon at a prestigious hospital. The argument appears reasonable and is appropriately cautious. If I were looking for advice on this issue, I would search in more clinically oriented databases to look for data on hits and misses for this diagnostic tool.
How: I was disappointed that no source was cited. This makes it difficult for me to evaluate how the evidence was collected. In my opinion, this is a good first-step article that presents a new diagnostic tool; however, before insisting on this type of biopsy over an axillary dissection, I would look for further information.
**Summary: My results of the CogLab Experiment surprised me. I scored a 25 on the test. I discovered that I do not have a high risk for breast cancer. I realize that the test is not an alternative to seeing a doctor and getting good physical care. Also, the critical review article caused me to think more about my own health and ways that I can take measures to insure that I stay healthy.
