Hello Classmates,
Part 1 – Operation Lightning Thunder
In 2008, after negotiations to sign a peace agreement between the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), led by Joseph Kony, and the Ugandan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudanese governments failed, the coalition of countries launched Operation Lightning Thunder. The military operation was aimed against the LRA in northeastern Congo. The United States Military supported this operation by sending 100 soldiers in an advisory role. The pillar of irregular warfare I identified was Counterterrorism (CT); the LRA was listed as a terrorist group by the US State Department in 2001, and the operation was aimed against the group making it into Counterterrorism. The two core activities that were used were CT (already explained) and Foreign Internal Defense (FID). The united states was conducting FID operations by sending 100 soldiers to advise the Ugandan, DRC, and southern Sudanese armies in order to protect the countries from terrorism.
Part 2 – Unconventional warfare (UW) supports a movement against a government, while counterinsurgency is an effort to defeat an insurgency. UW is supporting a group of people fighting AGAINST the nation-state, UW is only conducted when the nation-state is hostile to the U.S. thefore, the United States supports the government being overthrown by a friendly force. On the other hand, COIN is conducted to support a friendly nation-state that is dealing with an insurgent group. In this instance, the goal of the U.S. is not to overthrow the government but to help that government prevail against the insurgent group.

Hello Everyone,
Task Force Viking is an example of the Unconventional Warfare pillar being utilized in Iraq during March 2003. This operation involves both the Unconventional Warfare (UW) and Foreign Humanitarian Assistance (FHA) activities to support the UW Irregular Warfare pillar. Task Force Viking involved 10th Special Forces Group’s alliance with the Kurdish to disrupt the conventional Iraqi forces within Northern Iraq. The conduct of this operation would allow conventional forces freedom of movement and maneuver to the South of the Green Line, a political boundary line that cuts off Northeastern Iraq. Unknowingly, the foundation for this operation was set in 1991 when 10th SFG provided humanitarian aid to over 500,000 Kurdish in Operation Provide Comfort. The relationship built would be instrumental in the future UW campaign and supported the Irregular Warfare pillar. “The compassion 10th SFG showed the Kurds would not be forgotten, and in March 2003 the Kurds provided a warm reception when the 10th SFG returned” (Peltier, 2004) A key example of how an FHA mission has supported future operations with massive success, with many of 10th SFG leadership participating in Operation Provide Comfort. 10th SFG used their surrogate force, the Kurdish Peshmerga, of roughly 70,000 to conduct large scale operations against Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi Forces. Also, 10th SFG relied entirely on the Kurdish for their initial logistical needs, completely embedding themselves within the force. They essentially supported an insurgency (The Kurdish Peshmerga), with the might of American firepower and resources, to destroy the conventional Iraqi forces in Northern Iraq. The UW activity of using a surrogate force to overthrow a government naturally supported the UW campaign and pillar of Irregular Warfare.
The main difference between Counter Insurgency Operations (COIN) and Unconventional Warfare (UW) is who is supported. In COIN, SOF supports the local government to remove an insurgency. An example of this is the conduct of the War in Afghanistan from roughly 2007 until 2021. In UW, SOF supports an insurgency against the local government. An example of this is Task Force Dagger in which ODA 595 embedded with the Northern Alliance to destroy the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Many know this operation from the movie “12 Strong” or book Horse Soldiers. Another way to explain it is in COIN, SOF is fighting against the insurgency. In UW, SOF is fighting with the insurgency.

Week 6 questions from the Professor:
Student,
Below is a link to an article from Small Wars Journal entitled “Congress Has Embraced Unconventional Warfare: Will the US Military and The Rest of the US Government?” Please read the article and share any insights you have overall. Was there anything in particular that stood out to you? Did you previous to this ever give thought to the fact that countries such as China, Russia and Iran also practice UW? Do you see certain strengths and weaknesses in their doctrine that the United States can manipulate or exploit?
