JCA Universality and Relevance of A Dolls House Discussion – Question Description
I’m working on a theater writing question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.
Prompt: Universality and relevance of A Doll’s House
A Doll’s House is not just an indictment of marriage and gender roles, it is commentary on society as a whole. There is an irony in various elements that might keep a society grounded (at least in the traditional eyes of the day) are literally or symbolically falling apart. Some examples being a symbol of healthcare (Dr. Rank) is actually dying; a banker (Torvold) refuses to borrow money — even if his life depended upon it; a lawyer (Krogstad) used trickery to evade the law; and marriage is not painted in a positive light in the case of Nora and Mrs. Linde.
In addition to religion these might be considered pillars of society (a title of an earlier play by Ibsen) and in Ibsen’s Norway, they are crumbling. Liken them to our society today. Are there issues in modern America surrounding banking (income-inequality), medicine (healthcare as a right versus a business), marriage (approx. 50% divorce rate; same-sex marriage), sex and gender, etc.
Discuss why A Doll’s House resonates today even though the play is 140 years old, especially in the treatment of women.
