For this application assignment, you will write an approximately 3-4 page paper in which you will use what you learn about media technologies from course readings and viewings to grapple with what has been termed the “social dilemma.” In your paper, you will take a stand to answer the following question: Do you believe that social media technology influences society more or do you believe that social construction shapes social media more? (HINT: your answer to this question should be your thesis.) Please use the readings, movie, your notes, reading reviews, and discussion posts to help you write notes to help you write this paper. No need to use outside research for this paper. Then use your notes to draft the paper.
Your paper should include the following sections:
Introduction should include:
Explanation of what the social dilemma is
Significance of the social dilemma today
Thesis that takes a stand and answers the question posed.
Body should include:
Support for the side of the issue you are taking with your thesis, i.e., how has social media influenced society? OR how has social construction shaped social media? This support should include, where relevant:
definitions of key terms (including, but not limited to technological determinism, social construction, social media)
specific examples to demonstrate your points (these may be your own examples or from readings)
comparison/contrast between perspectives of technological determinism and social construction.
Conclusion should include:
Summary of how the support provided in the body supports the thesis.
Answers to the following questions:
What did you learn about social media through this paper?
Will your attitudes about social media change as a result of doing this assignment? Why or why not?
