ISSC 242 America Public University Wk 1 Virtualization Discussion Response – Description
To be completely honest I was having a hard time with this post because I wasn’t fully understanding the topic. Maybe I’m still not entirely. But after doing some reading I realized that I’ve been issued a computer through work that had different operating systems running on it. Only at the time, I didn’t realize that’s what that was.
To begin, Virtual Machines rely on what’s called a hypervisor. They can also be referred to as virtual machine monitors. The purpose of this is to help the VM function properly.
One reason someone might want to install different operating systems on a VM is simply to test a few, in order to see which one is preferred, or learn how they function with your software programs. A great example I read about in an article by ATI Solutions Inc., is installing programs onto a VM in order to train employees. This allows them to become accustomed to the new program and make mistakes without it having an effect on their business.
Another benefit of having multiple operating systems running at once is that they wouldn’t have an impact on one another. Having different tasks running simultaneously could increase efficiency, which would then save time and money.
In reading different examples from an article on makeuseof.com, I was surprised by the possibility of using a VM to test potential malware. The author warns that there is a small chance a potential virus could detect its in a virtual environment and try to get out, which I found very interesting. I personally don’t think I would want to try that, but I’m amazed that’s a possibility!
