Task Overview
This assessment requires you to critically analyse Erikson’s and Freud’s theories of
development through a personal reflective lens. Your response must be written in an essay ,
well-structured, supported by scholarly research, and demonstrate critical engagement with
lifespan development concepts.
Instructions:
In your essay, you are expected to:

1. Identify and reflect on one of Erikson’s psychosocial stages that is personally
   meaningful to you.
2. Use one childhood or adolescent memory to compare how both Erikson and Freud
   would interpret your development at that stage.
3. Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of each theory in explaining your
   experience and its long-term influence on your development.
   Part 1: Erikson’s Stages of Development (example, 400 words)

• Identify one of Erikson’s eight major stages that you find particularly meaningful in the
  context of lifespan development.
• Explain why this stage is significant, drawing on relevant theories and research to
  support your discussion.
  Part 2: Comparative Analysis of Erikson and Freud (example, 1400 words)
  Using a fond childhood or adolescent memory, compare Erikson’s and Freud’s theories of
  development. In your discussion, address the following points:

1. Stage Identification:
   o Which stage of Erikson’s psychosocial development theory does your memory
   align with?
   o Which stage of Freud’s psychosexual development theory does it fit into?
2. Impact on Development:
   o According to Erikson and Freud, how significant has this event been in shaping
   your development?
3. Theoretical Evaluation:
   o Assess the strengths and limitations of Erikson’s and Freud’s theories in
   explaining childhood experiences.
   o Discuss how these theories account for the long-term impact of early life events
   on lifespan development.
   Support your discussion with relevant literature and integrate insights from your personal
   experience within a theoretical framework.

   o You must refer to Sigelman & Rider (2017) as a key source in your discussion.
   This is in addition to any other research articles used.
5. Scholarly Sources:
   o Your essay must incorporate a minimum of seven (7) peer-reviewed journal
   articles (published within the last 10 years).
