Infographic – Spotlight on Applied Linguistic Anthropology
Focus: Word Choice
This Infographic project asks you to research the importance of word choice (focusing on a specific word or words) as it relates to a topic connected to language and culture. The goal of this assignment is to highlight the importance of word choice and the consequences of chosen words in spoken and/or written form. As you have learned in this course, there are numerous contexts or topics which illustrate the connections between language and culture. Choose a context to research that interests you. Possible topics for this assignment include (but are not limited to) the following:
Language and power
Language and ethnicity
Language and class
Language and politics
Language and framing (for example, protester/looter, hurricane victim/criminal, assertive/pushy, etc.,)
Language and doublespeak
Language and gender
Language and bilingualism
Language of inclusion or exclusion
You will create visual slides for your Infographic using PowerPoint. The minimum requirement is 3 slides; you may turn in more than 3 slides if you wish. There is NO penalty for turning in more than 3 slides. You MUST include all of the elements listed below. The following is one way to organize your slides:
SLIDE 1:
Include “Infographic by (your name)”
Identify your chosen topic
Identify the word(s) you will be analyzing
Why did you choose this topic to research?
Graphic(s)
SLIDE 2:
Summarize the main points of your research
Make sure to include the consequences of your chosen word(s)
Graphic(s)
SLIDE 3:
Your conclusion and suggestion(s) for future research related to this topic
Identify your source(s) for research (title, author, bibliographic reference)
Graphic(s)
IMPORTANT: Minimum word count is 200 words. Remember, the emphasis in this assignment is on graphics and visual communication of your information. In addition, you are REQUIRED to create your slides using PowerPoint. You are also REQUIRED to do your own original library research for material to include in your Infographic. Even though we have covered many of the above topics in this class, you may NOT use material provided by the course as your research. In other words, you MUST go beyond class material and do your own research to present in your Infographic.
