Iconography is one of the techniques of art history which studies the content of images and systems of representation used by artist to convey a particular meaning. Some folks might use the term “symbolism” to connote a similar meaning to iconography. One system of imagery is Greek Iconography, where the goddess Athena is represented by an owl, and the goddess Aphrodite with a seashell and/or pearl. The former represents Athena’s widsom, while the latter represents Aphrodite’s beauty.
