Houston Community College System Underpants Sees Scientist Dismissed Over Test that Trapped Cheating Husband Case Study – Description

Case Information:
CSI: Underpants Sees Scientist Dismissed Over Test that Trapped Cheating Husband
by James Bone, Times Online on August 22, 2007.
Ann Chamberlain ran a DNA test on her husband’s underwear in the crime laboratory where she was employed since 1999, to determine if he was cheating. She then testified to conducting this investigation at the divorce hearing. The DNA test was discovered when her husband’s lawyer sent a letter to her Michigan State Police laboratory questioning the improper DNA testing. Although Ann had won awards for her work and testified in more than 50 cases, she was fired for misusing the crime laboratory.
Chamberlain stated that the tests were conducted outside of work hours with expired chemicals. It was later discovered through court testimony that she had previously conducted a paternity test for one of her husband’s friends and allowed him access to the laboratory while she ran his sample.
So where does everyone stand on the issue? The Michigan State Police suspended her with pay while conducting the investigation. After the investigation was completed, they fired Chamberlain for violating state policy. Her husband’s lawyer feels that she should face criminal charges for stealing from taxpayers. The president of Forensic Science Consultants, where Chamberlain also works, stated that she is an excellent scientist who made an error in judgment caused by stress.
