Response to Peer:
how did the ideology of the wighs differ from the Jacksonian Democrats?
The contributors of the whigs were Henry Clay, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, James Taylor. The ideology of the Whigs was to support the supremacy of congress over the presidency. The whigs’ ideas were to tighten the American economy and to bring a lot of benefits that created an independent and unified nation. Many were anti-slavery and were against Indian removal. The whigs wanted that the Federal and State governments to promote business, and infrastructure. They also wanted to protect the industry from foreign competition. But to do so, they need it revenue. They also needed the continuation and the expansion of powers of the national banks which could have provided loans to the governments to keep a stable money system.
The Jacksonian Democrats were the opposite of the whigs. They were opposing to everything that the whigs wanted to do. The Democrats were against the national bank, which was Jackson’s major battle in his second election term as president. The democrats were also in favor of slave labor system in the south. They were looking to see the explanation onto the next territories. The democrats were also in favor of the states rights and did not like the idea of the Federal Government involved in social and economic affairs.
