HIST 101 America Public University Wk 5 California Gold Rush Discussion Response – Description

Good evening class!
The California Gold Rush was one of the most famous and largest gold rushes to ever happen. The very first event that took place and what initially started the California Gold Rush was when James Marshall stumbled across some gold specks on January 24, 1848, near where he was building a sawmill for John Sutter who employed him to do so. Overtime a good number of people found out about his findings and by the spring of 1849 it was in full swing with about 300,000 people from all over running to California which in turn aided in the diversity. The California Gold Rush was very much important to the American economy because it caused economic growth to California, and they were able to acknowledge themselves as a state. The state was able to do this because people were coming from all over wanting a piece of the gold that was being found. It brought agriculture and industrial development into play in California as well. The American people were able to take the gold that they had found and exchange it for money to help build up their land. All in all, the California Gold Rush was important to the American economy simply because of the wealth that it brought and the amount of people from different cultures that it had drawn in. With everyone going to California and it becoming a state it was brought up about slavery and whether or not it would be a free state. In the end it was established as a free state but not without the lack of advocates of both sides going back and forth.
