Muhammad, the founder of Islam, played a central and transformative role in the establishment of this major world religion. Born in Mecca around 570 CE, Muhammad received revelations from God through the angel Gabriel, which became the basis for the Islamic faith. He was both a prophet and a political leader, and his teachings and actions laid the foundation for the Islamic community, known as the ummah. Muhammad’s role in the founding of Islam is characterized by his spreading of the Quran, the holy book of Islam, which Muslims believe to be the literal word of God. Muslims commemorate Muhammad’s life and mission through various practices, including regular prayers, fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, and the annual celebration of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Additionally, Muslims strive to emulate Muhammad’s qualities of mercy, patience, humility, and justice, considering him the perfect embodiment of these virtues.
