Discussion of other student:
In developing a Capstone project focused on reducing recovery room time in ambulatory surgical patients at LFMC, it would be helpful to use a combination of nursing theories.
For the nursing theory, I will be using the Synergy Model for Patient Care, developed by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. This model emphasizes the importance of matching patient needs with nurse competencies. In the context of this project, it may involve developing nursing skills or providing tools to improve efficiency and reduce recovery room times (Hong, Kim, 2021).
The synergy model supports that when patients are matched with nurses who have the right competencies, there is an improvement in patient outcomes, (Kerfoot, Lavandero, Cox, Triola, Pacini, Hanson, 2006) which aligns with the project. It is an effective model for this project, allowing us to look at specific nurse-related factors contributing to prolonged recovery time and what competencies may be required to improve this.
For change theory, Lewin’s Change Management Theory could be particularly effective. This theory proposes three stages: Unfreeze, Change, and Refreeze (Shirey, 2013).
Unfreeze: This stage involves preparing the organization to accept that change is necessary. In this project, it could involve gathering and presenting data on the extent of the problem and the benefits of addressing it.
Change: This stage involves implementing the change. For this project, this might involve developing and delivering training programs to improve nursing competencies or changing protocols and procedures to improve efficiency.
Refreeze: This stage involves reinforcing and stabilizing the change to make it part of the norm. In this project, it could involve continuous monitoring and evaluation of recovery room times and patient satisfaction scores, along with regular feedback and reinforcement to staff.
The combination of these two theories would allow the project to take a comprehensive, systemic approach to change that considers both the competencies required by nursing staff and the steps necessary to implement and reinforce change in a healthcare setting. By using the Synergy Model for Patient Care, the project can ensure that it is patient-focused, while Lewin’s Change Management Theory provides a roadmap for implementing change effectively.
