ENVS 525 Final Project and Presentation, Option 2:
Greenhouse Gas Inventory
Assignment Overview
Estimate the annual greenhouse gas emissions from an organization.
Instructions
Here are the suggested steps to create your tree planting plan:
Scope Definition: Determine the scope of the inventory, including organizational boundaries,
operational boundaries and scopes (direct and indirect emissions), and the sources to be
included. If there are any changes since you submitted your proposal, communicate with your
instructor.
Data Collection: Gather relevant data on energy consumption, transportation, waste generation,
and other activities that emit greenhouse gases. Collect data from various sources, such as
utility bills, fuel receipts, production records, vehicle mileage logs, and surveys. Keep data well
organized and submit it with your final presentation.
Verification and Quality Assurance: Review data accuracy, completeness, and consistency to
ensure reliable results.
Calculation: Use the EPA Simplified GHG Simplified Emissions Calculator or other appropriate
tool to estimate the emissions. Submit your final spreadsheet along with your final presentation.
Reporting: Create graphs and tables to summarize the results of the data collection and
emissions calculations.
Action Planning: Identify emission reduction strategies and opportunities based on high-emitting activities. Develop an action plan outlining specific measures to mitigate emissions and
achieve reduction targets.
Consider Stakeholder Engagement: Who are the stakeholders? Who would you share the GHG
inventory findings, reduction efforts, and progress with? Who would be engaged in action
planning? Stakeholders can include employees, investors, customers, and the public.
Presentation
You will be creating a presentation for your final project assignment. The presentation will include voice
over narration by you (with or without an inset camera view of yourself during the presentation).
Instructions
Include the following content in your presentation. You can modify the order of slides to best suit your
presentation.
Title slide
Introduction & goals: Why did you choose this organization? What are the goals of the inventory
and what are the organizational boundaries?
Literature review: Include at least two slides and a total of at least four citations. These slides
summarize/highlight some key findings from your literature review and support the need for
your project.
Environmental justice analysis: Include at least two slides and at least two
graphs/graphics/maps. These slides summarize/highlight some key findings from your
environmental justice analysis paper and identify important local issues in the community.
Methods: Explain the methods used to collect data and calculate emissions. What are the
sources of uncertainty?
GHG inventory results: Include at least two slides on the emission estimates. Include at least 4
quantitative results and at least two graphs.
Climate action plan (CAP): What sources could be targeted for emissions reduction? What
impact would this have on the overall GHG emissions? In choosing emission sources to identify
for mitigation, consider both the amount of emissions and the feasibility of reduction. If
applicable, relate the plan to the environmental justice analysis and/or triple bottom line.
Stakeholder engagement plan: Summarize a plan for stakeholder engagement for your project.
Who are the stakeholders? How would you communicate the results of the GHG inventory to them
and who would you involve them in the action planning process? If applicable, consider the
environmental justice analysis in your recommendations.
References Cited: Include a list of references cited in CSE format. All citations should also be in
CSE format.
Acknowledgements: Include a thank you if you interviewed any one. Include any
acknowledgement needed for the sources of data used. If necessary include a disclaimer that
results are preliminary and not to be cited or reproduced.
