Grand Canyon University Finance Management and Sustainability Methods Discussion – Description
Research the delivery, finance, management, and sustainability methods of the U.S. health care system. Evaluate the effectiveness of one or more of these areas on quality patient care and health outcomes. Propose a potential health care reform solution to improve effectiveness in the area you evaluated and predict the expected effect. Describe the effect of health care reform on the U.S. health care system and its respective stakeholders. Support your post with a peer-reviewed journal article.

The largest percentage of environment-related deaths worldwide are related to non communicable diseases (NCD’s), (Green, 2018). These NCD’s include many of the most debilitating diseases that affect millions of Americans and furthermore affect an enormous strain on healthcare systems annually: Cardiovascular disease, Stroke and diabetes. Most of us know in healthcare that these are primarily preventable disease processes, that through health education and healthy eating habits and regular exercise, can be avoided. However the greater population who are not learned in the health sciences are not so well informed. This inadequate knowledge leads to poor health outcomes and lifelong battles with intermittent hospitalizations and gaps in care. Population Health Units in hospitals are a an excellent example of the drive toward preventative healthcare, and it is the opinion of this author that this is a massively underutilized aspect of healthcare systems.
Conversely, private insurance companies and policy-makers have been trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act that has provided a social net for so many millions of Americans. One of the main goals of this Act, was to provide health equity to those previously underserved by the healthcare system. One barrier to healthcare, as well as preventative care is being uninsured. If the ACA is repealed, the people that benefited from having access to affordable health insurance will be left without coverage and they will fall back into the gaps of care, (Tello, 2021). To avoid this mass exodus from healthcare availability, concerned citizens need to write to their legislators and voice concerns over losing insurance coverage.

The United States’ healthcare system struggles in its metrics compared to other countries. One of these metrics of focus is finance. Patients may find ways to gain affordable or even free healthcare, however, other factors are still at play that cost patients money. One of the more expensive parts of healthcare in the united states is prescriptions. Depending on the prescription, a patient’s pills can cost anywhere from nothing to hundreds or thousands of dollars. These prices are inclusive of insurance. Another financial barrier patients face is transportation to and from healthcare centers. Most of the time paying for transportation is out of pocket (Green, 2018). Quality patient care is often times dependent on higher payment or more expensive insurance. Individuals with PPOs pay more to have a wider variety of choices in healthcare, oftentimes leading to faster treatment. Those with HMOs pay less for insurance but are more limited to one company, and oftentimes find themselves having to schedule out doctor appointments further out than someone with a PPO insurance plan. When there are delays in healthcare for any reason, the patient is at a higher risk for disease development or a worse outcome of their current health.
One potential healthcare reform solution to improve effectiveness in terms of finance is the implementation of a single-payer healthcare system. With the single-payer system, the government would be the sole provider of healthcare insurance through tax funding instead of private insurance. This system could potentially reduce costs by eliminating private insurance companies and their overhead costs. With the single-payer model, everyone would have equal access to healthcare, and billing and payment would be streamlined. Healthcare data analysis would be streamlined under a central system making it easier and more effective to view health trends and disease prevention strategies.
Based on the design and implementation of the single-payer system, stakeholders can be affected in numerous ways. With a better understanding of health and disease trends, thanks to a singular streamlined healthcare system, stakeholders would be able to invest and promote treatment and preventative healthcare measurements more accurately in their respective communities. For this idea to take place, the U.S. healthcare system would require nationwide public pressure on the U.S. government to make the change to expand a more complex and quality version of Medicaid/MediCal that would please the masses (Brown, 2019).
