Thought: Dealing with pain is frustrating not only for the patient but can also become concerning for family healthcare providers. As future providers you want to help these patients properly manage their pain but at certain levels it is important to know when there is not much more that can be offered in order to protect the patient and ourselves. So when is the care of pain out of our hands as an FNP?
Question: At what point in a patient’s care would it be appropriate to refer the patient to pain management?
Epiphany: As a future FNP it would be worthwhile knowing limitations for patient care when it comes to treatment of pain. When is enough, enough at this level of care. Militello et al. (2020), reported that there are two things to consider when treating a patient with pain, those are: to refer the patient to a pain management specialist if the primary care provider begins to feel uncomfortable carrying on with level of care. The other indication for referral to pain management is if the current treatment of chronic pain is ineffective and if there is no cure available to treat the underlying cause of pain.
