Glendale Community College MUSIC 122 – Description
For your second project, here is a list of ideas for things you can do. The first one is a term paper, so feel free to do that one, but if you’d rather get more creative or writing isn’t your strongest skill, read the rest of the ideas..
I hope these assignments will allow you to show off your unique skills and encourage you to think more critically about the musical traditions presented in this course.
Each week, you will hand in one step for this project. You will see what is expected from you each step as the modules open. But remember, in Week 5, you will have to hand in the completed project, so plan your time wisely.
Options for Project 2
Term Paper!
This is the old school favorite: a 3-5 page paper on a topic of your choice (pending guidance from me). You’ll do some research, cite your sources (at least 4, including 2 peer-reviewed articles or books), and try to answer some kind of question, like “How did Romantic-era music influence the development of film music?” or “How did Public Performance in the Classical Period support artists?”
Perform or Compose!
Lecture recital – the performance or composition of a piece of music similar to one we have studied in class, The performer or composer must also present information about the performance or the composition. The performance or new composition must:
Display an understanding of the historical performance practice of that genre
Correctly conform to the expected form and structure of chosen genre (if you’re composing)
Some examples of music to perform or emulate (if you’re composing):
a recitative and aria from an opera like Mozart’s The Magic Flute, an art song like one from Schubert’s Lovely Maid of the Mill, a rock song like the Beatles, a popular song like something from Beyonce’s Lemonade, a string quartet like Haydn’s “The Joke” (one movement in sonata or rondo form), a piano trio like Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G Minor, a piece of film music with leitmotifs, etc. If you’re not sure whether the thing you want to do works in this class, get in touch and we’ll figure it out.
Perform or present via video. (You can use Canvas Studio for this.)
