GLE 598S Scholarly Contributions in International Education Essay – Description
Procedures
This week you will be constructing an annotated overview of your selected scholar’s key works.
Begin by reviewing once again the final paper guidelines in the syllabus. Based on your review of these guidelines, building on what you learned about your author’s key works while you were writing the draft for your “Introduction” and “Brief biographical sketch” sections. Do the following:
Generate a reference list which will include the works you cited last week as well as other key works the scholar has produced (note that this is very much like a search of the literature on your scholar). For a scholar with a long and distinguished trajectory, try to find research according to tuning points (e.g., changing work place, promotion from associate to tenure professor, evidence of experiences abroad, and so on—try to identify these changes by looking at your scholar’s curriculum vitae). Be sure to include any of this author’s seminal works (“seminal” – planting a seed for a new influence within the field). While theoretical pieces are important, try to concentrate on finding key pieces of empirical research your scholar has produced (you will need some empirical pieces to complete the Module 4 assignment). Include a DOI whenever it is available. DOIs are the “http://doi.org/…” URLs that appear in most APA-formatted reference lists, such as the one that appears in the following example:
Lagemann, E. C. (1989). The plural worlds of educational research. History of Education Quarterly, 29(2), 185–214. https://doi.org/10.2307/368309Links to an external site.
You can read more about DOIs here: https://askalibrarian.asu.edu/faq/203429Links to an external site.. You can find DOIs for many articles on crossref.orgLinks to an external site.. At the end of each reference, place in parentheses the number of citations you found for this piece in Google Scholar or Scopus.
After each reference, provide a short description of what aspect of your comparative scholar’s research each work illustrates, including what sections of the paper you believe the reference may inform. One sentence under each reference will suffice.
For each empirical research reference only, provide an annotated entry. This is like the summary you produced in GLE 502, so remember to include all the elements. Here is a summary template for an annotation:
‘[author (s) name (year)] investigated [research problem] using [theoretical framework/assumption] to [solve a problem], specifically they asked [research questions] and hypothesized/assumed that [summary of hypothesis/assumption]. They used a [name of research design consult PCC] research design. The author selected [number and characteristics of participants, country] using [sampling strategy consult PCC] where they [describe how the sample was selected]. They used [name and describe the instruments of data collection] to collect data. The data collection consisted of [number/location of survey questionnaires, secondary data analysis, interviews, focus groups, observations, etc.]. They analyzed the data using [statistics, coding, thematic analysis, etc.] Their results show [briefly describe]. The authors suggest [implications of this study for the field or for future research].
