Reading Response Prompt  

In paragraph form, please respond to the prompt listed below. Your response should answer all questions completely, and will probably be somewhere around 500 words at a minimum. As you write your response, be sure to draw connections between your ideas and the ideas from the reading – referring back to the reading and citing the page number is required to receive full points for your reading response. Be sure to refer back to the text and cite the author’s ideas as you discuss them, whether you direct quote or paraphrase these main ideas (see this page of the Purdue OWL for correct MLA in-text citation format and this page of the Purdue OWL for correct APA in-text citation format). I do not expect a Works Cited or References page for these minor assignments.

Assignment Overview

For this activity, we are going to develop our understanding of genres and explore the possibilities for research by identifying and analyzing examples from everyday life. Consider which real-life conversations you might be most interested in joining with your own research, and brainstorm some relevant genres. Make a list of what you come up with. Alternatively, you might make a list of activities you engage in or interests that you have, and identify types of writing relevant to those as well.

Genre Analysis Questions

Once you have created your list, review all of the genres you came up with and select one that’s the most interesting to you. Locate 2-3 examples (look online if you don’t already have access) and review them to answer the following questions:

What is the purpose of this genre? Why do writers and readers use this genre? What do they hope to accomplish?

What is the subject of the genre? List the issues, ideas, questions, or topics the genre addresses.

Who is the audience for this genre? How can you tell?

Identify & Describe Patterns or recurrent features in the genre:o What sorts of content, examples, or evidence usually appear in this genre?o How are texts in this genre structured and formatted (organization, layout, medium, design)? What does the appearance communicate to us?o How are languages used in this genre?o Is there any evidence of translingualism, code-meshing, or neologisms?o What kind of diction is used (word choices, jargon, colloquialisms)? o How would you describe the tone?o What kinds of sentences are typically used (length, passive/active, complex/simple)?

Is this genre something you would be interested in studying or learning more about? What other kinds of genres can you imagine doing this type of analysis with for your own research project this semester? Think about the type of topic that you might find in Stylus.

Submission & Assessment

To earn full credit for this assignment, you must:

Fully answer each of the questions above; note that there are questions within questions.

Draw questions between your own ideas and ideas from the reading, using proper citation style.

Submit your response as a Microsoft Word document by the deadline.

Please see the rubric for further clarification. NOTE: This assignment has a 3-day window for late submissions without the need for approval, but it deducts 5% per day.
