GCU reply to another student – Description
CatherineDescribe two external stressors that are unique to adolescents. Discuss what risk-taking behaviors may result from the external stressors and what support or coping mechanism can be introduced. In the developmental stage of adolescences many dynamic changes across multiple systems occur. Youth become more highly attuned to the social environment as they enter adolescence, with peer relationships playing a central role in adolescent wellbeing. This increased sensitivity to the social environment represents a distinct shift from childhood and may mark a period during which social stressors exert unbalanced effects relative to other stages of life (Lucinda et al, 2021). Research suggest adolescent have poor decision-making abilities leading to an increase in at-risk behaviors that may contribute to teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, relationship violence, eating disorder and substance abuse (Faulkner et al, 2022). Some stressors adolescence may face are transitioning from childhood to adulthood, peer pressure, bullying, issues at home, and juggling a busy academic and extracurricular schedule. Introducing and educating teens on utilization of positive coping skills such as exercise, meditation, drawing, journaling ect, is essential to combating the issues they may face over the adolescent timeline and deterring engagement in things such as self-harm and substance abuse. Cultivating a positive open parental-child relationship and line of communication is also vital to ensure a loving trusting bond occurs and that the child may be more willing to be honest about issues he or she is struggling with.
