Toddler is a child between 1-3 years, this period the child has increased curiosity, mobility, and independence. They also tend to explores more on world around them. This is the time caregiver can really get annoyed if they are not in good mood or they don’t understand child developmental stage. At this time you can notice the toddler giving you attitude/tempered tantrums and negative behavior like throwing things at you. All this is because the child wants to gain autonomy. (Treas et al., 2022)
According to Stanford medicine 2018, there are signs and symptoms that child who is abused shows emotional examples include excessive fear, anxiety, clinging, afraid toward people, crying or changes in eating behaviors. Physical sign includes; vomiting, irritability, and abdominal pain/headache that has no medical cause, difficult walking in case of sexual abuse, genital bleeding or pain, unexplained symptoms such as brushing, bite marks, or even broken skins. Children who have been sexually abused would also be reluctant to remove clothes due to fear. Others suffer from UTI. When assessing ask if the toddler has shown negative behavior such as head banging.
There are various culture practices that can be misinterpreted as abuse such as cupping, spooning, moxibustion, coining, dermabrasion therapy that involves rubbing of the skin (Vietnamese). All these therapies do cause long term body marks like petechiae –which are pinpoint, round spots that form on the skin (Mayo clinic, 2018) , purpura occurs when blood vessels leak blood under skin, hyperpigmentation that usually looks like abuse appears around the sexual skin areas such as nipples, scrotum and libia majora (Andrews et al., 2020)
According to Washington State 2020, everyone is a mandatory report in case of child abuse that is suspected or witnessed. Reporting mechanism include make a call to child protective service that is available in every community office. Things that are required during reporting are the name, address and age of the child, name and contact information of the guardian, nature of the abuse, evidence of previous incidences and any other information that can help identify the perpetrator.
Age is one factor that leads to abuse, children are just vulnerable and they cannot fight for themselves. Parents/caregivers who do drugs /alcohol and they invite their friends to visit their houses increases the likelihood that the children in such families will report cases of child abuse (CDC, 2022).
