The basic nursing assessment is the same across all ages. The use of the nurses’ senses, vision, hearing, touching, and smelling. Along with history taking, symptom review and care plan formation are standard. It is how the information is obtained that varies from the child to the adult. Adults can express their needs and feelings verbally whereas the child may not. The child may be able to tell you where it hurts by pointing to a doll or drawing a picture. Often the child is more afraid of the environment than an adult would be, so the nurse would need to provide distraction to the child to ease their fears. Education techniques vary from the child to the adult as well. The adult may be able to read an instruction pamphlet, but the child would learn better from pictures. The nurse must speak at a level the child will understand. By knowing the child’s stage in psychosocial development, the nurse can provide the appropriate form of communication. The nurse could use different strategies for engagement such as drawing, coloring, use of dolls/toys, and games to engage the child. The adult engagement strategies would include role playing, asking open-ended questions, and active listening skills.
