Disasters bring upon substantial damage, whether it is a natural or man-made disaster. Primary and secondary agents consist of the cause of injury and direct result after a disaster (Falkner, 2018). Many factors during and after a disaster directly impact individuals and communities alike. For instance, during a human caused disaster such as an act of terrorism, many individuals seek faith-based support in addition to medical services. During the last few years, there has been an increase in mass shootings in America, leaving traumatizing psychological effects in individuals, families, communities, and health care providers. Faith-based disaster response organizations support and assist communities following their religious doctrines that speak largely of compassion, caring, and helping the less fortunate (Falkner, 2018). Common faith based-disaster organizations include Catholic Charities USA, United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), and Lutheran Disaster Response (Falkner, 2018). Nurses must consider the impact that is left on survivors and families during such tragic events, and refer patients to case management, chaplain services, and social work to coordinate counseling and appropriate resources as indicated (Falkner, 2018).
Spiritual care is valuable for a holistic recovery, and community health nurses need to advocate for the spiritual needs of their patients. A nurse can apply the Christian worldview during a disaster management plan by assessing the spiritual needs of the community and applying spiritual practices in the plan of care. Spirituality is an important part of a holistic approach that will allow a community to heal better. Drawing strength from spiritual beliefs will aid in the bonding and healing of a community as a whole.

Members of a community are subject to being part of a disaster at any given point. Some communities are prone to certain types of disasters while others may not, all having to do with the environment a community is located in. Disasters are classified into two different categories, natural disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes, and man-made disasters such as plane crashes and train wrecks (Falkner, 2018). It is very important to recognize that an individuals spirituality often manifests in the midst of disasters due to the tremendous distress that patients are subjected to. During these times it is very important for the nurse to recognize the importance of acknowledging the spirituality of the patients and attempting to integrate it into their plan of care in an appropriate manner. Nurses are able to incorporate the Christian worldview when caring for these patients by providing care around the notion that all humans are created in the image of God and therefor hold a sense of intrinsic value. This value is present in all patients regardless of their culture, and background. Another aspect that is worth noting is the role a public health nurse plays during a disaster. It is a nurses obligation to appropriately assess whether or not the response to a disaster was adequate or not, and also to improve upon emergency responses.
