GCCCD Rhetorical Analysis/Reflection of Book – Description

Prompt:
Apply rhetorical analysis to a section of Ken Bain’s What the Best College Students Do (pdf of book is attached). In order to do this, you will need to first identify a section of the book that impacted you. Then, review the terms discussed this semester (rhetoric, analysis, assumption, appeals, etcetera) and apply them to the section. What argument does Bain make in the section you have chosen? What type of evidence does he use? How does it appeal to his intended audience? Is it convincing? What reaction did you have?
For this assignment, you may use first-person voice, but do avoid writing solely about your opinions. Instead, you should think carefully about the book, analyze aspects of it, then include your experience in the conclusion. One way to approach this is to write a four-paragraph essay. For example, an outline for this project might be:
Introduction: Briefly introduce the book and provide a thesis that specifies what will be analyzed and your conclusion about the rhetorical savviness of the text. 
Body paragraph 1: Closely analyze a strategy used in the book. Provide an example, explain what it appeals to, discuss how it might impact the audience. 
Body paragraph 2: Closely analyze another strategy used in the book. Provide an example, explain what it appeals to, discuss how it might impact the audience. 
Conclusion: Discuss the impact the book had on you and connect to your thesis (answer the question: Is it convincing?)
