Assume you are a mandated reporter within each of these vignettes that are given. Please read the vignettes and then answer these questions:
Is this reportable, if yes, why do you believe it is reportable, if no, why do you believe it is not reportable?
If you answered yes to the first question, is it reportable to the Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) or to the Police and why do you believe it is reportable?
1.A mother is summoned to the school of her 5 year old son. He has been misbehaving, and she is required to take him home. As they leave the school yard, she whacks the boy across the rear with her hand. You are the child’s teacher and you observe this.
2.A woman throws her boyfriend out of the house immediately after she discovers that he has molested her four year old son. You are the woman’s therapist.
3.A five month old child is brought to childcare by his 17 year old mother. The infant has some bruises on his left arm and an ear infection. Eight days ago, he had been brought in with bruises on both of his cheeks. The mother’s explanation for the first injury was that the child had fallen off a bed. She has no explanation for the second injury. You are one of the providers at the childcare center.
4.A patient of yours reports to you that four children, ages six months, three years, six years and eleven years, who are neighbors of hers. are left alone every morning from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. while the mother takes the father to work. The patient states that, although the 11 year old is a responsible child, she worries that he is not capable of caring for himself and his younger siblings.
5.A 7 year old boy is in your class. Every week you notice bruises on his arms. Some are darker than others and appear newer. He also looks unbathed a lot of the time and his clothes are worn out. During the winter months, he often wears a short sleeve shirt and appears to be shivering. On several occasions, he has “forgotten” his lunch money and has no lunch to eat. You usually arrange for him to get lunch at the cafeteria. When you ask how he gets the bruises, he tells you that he falls a lot.
6.You observe that a child in your class always keeps to herself. Amanda is 9 years old and an only child. You have met her parents during open house and both were very nice. They both work long hours, but seem to spend time with their daughter on the the weekend, taking trips and visiting local sites. The girl does not play with other children and often prefers to eat by herself. When you talk to her one day and ask her about her social life and the other kids, she tells you about the babysitter who watches her everyday after school. After talking with her for a while, she begins to discuss the “touching games” her babysitter plays with her. These “touching games” involve the babysitter touching the girl on her chest and inside her underwear. Amanda tells you that the babysitter then has her touch her in the same way. She tells you that her babysitter told her not to tell anyone, but that she does not really like it.
7.Jim is a 10 year old boy. He is rather outgoing and popular with a group of boys. Quite frequently, he has cuts and scabs on his legs and knees. When you question him about them, he tells you that he rides a dirt bicycle in races and falls often. He gives a lot of details about the courses, races, and his bicycle. His mood seems happy. You know his parents are divorced and he has had some counseling in the past.
8.Cheryl is the mother of six-year old Kimberly. The police recently searched their apartment for drugs and found it to be a shooting gallery for heroin. Numerous syringes and needles were found and Cheryl and others present were arrested. Kimberly sat on the living room couch during the raid. There is no definite evidence that Cheryl is now using drugs, although she has a history of drug use and is currently in a drug rehabilitation program. She says that her boyfriend comes into her apartment with his friends and they use drugs without her permission. Cheryl has a full time job as a secretary, and Kimberly is doing well in school. You are a counselor at Cheryl’s rehab program.
9.Three-year-old David arrives at daycare tearful and upset. You notice that he has a red mark on his face and appears to be favoring his left arm. His mother explains that he is fine and is crying because he got in trouble for wetting his pants and making them late. You ask the child if any parts of his body hurt, and he indicates his arm, but does not provide a verbal response. When you ask how he got hurt, he appears frightened and does not answer you. Although you have had concerns about David’s care in the past, this is the first time you have noticed possible injuries.
10.Rodney is a 6-month-old infant who comes to your office because he has been crying whenever his mother changes his diaper. The mother, with a flat affect, tells you that Rodney fell off the changing table onto a carpeted floor last night. Upon physical examination you note swelling and tenderness on the right thigh. An x-ray reveals a midshaft femur fracture.
