Freelancer Social Insurance in China Dissertation – Description
As a postgraduate student in Social and Public Policy, I am required to write an 8,000 word dissertation on “Social Insurance for Freelancers in China’s New Employment Model”, can you give me some advice on the structure of the article? My proposal is attached below
here are some advice my tutor give me about my dissertation.
Weaknesses and suggestions for improvement
*** I have made some comments on the script itself for you to scroll through and look at – so please read these as well – but I will expand on a couple of these points below ***
Firstly, in terms of setting up the research, you need to read far more widely and deeply in relation to both your chosen substantive topic – labour market changes and the rise of flexible working / freelancing – and the methods literature within social sciences, focusing upon your chosen approach – a mixed method approach including both Qual and Quant methods.
At the moment, the description of the study is much too general and the aims of the project are quite vague. To improve, you need to develop and state clearly your main research question(s) and a clear research puzzle needs to be set out at the core of the project (see my comments on this part of the proposal). I also think your main research question(s) should benefit from being elaborated through the use of smaller, more focused sub-questions to give your project some structure and clear boundaries around your sample(s) of data.
On that point, secondly, it is unclear to me what the boundaries are around your project and so what the sample will be. At the moment, you mention both “two cities” and “different countries” as your focus, which needs to be confirmed. Also, there is no clear date range within which you will be exploring social insurance policies. I do not imagine you want to review policies that are many years old, so what is your starting / ending point (and why)?
Finally, and linked to all of the above, you need to explain better exactly what you will do in terms of methods. Your descriptions of both Qualitative and Quantitative Research are much too broad and contain no reference to social science literature. Which methods will you use to analyse social insurance policies (e.g. policy review techniques, content analysis, thematic analysis, or something else)?

Case study Primary subjects:
secondary analysis of qualitative data and published data in the public domain
2 Chinese cities compared: Shanghai (with household registration restrictions), Guangzhou (without household registration restrictions)
Time frame: 2015-2019 (emergence of labour panic across China from 2015) 2019-2022 (impact on flexibly employed people before and after the new crown epidemic)
Security Policies of 2 Western countries (with mature unemployment protection systems already in place) analysed in the context of local realities, to derive their mature theoretical approaches for China to learn from: Japan and Canada
policy review techniques, comparing the differences between policies and comparing them with published demographic and labour force statistics in different regions.
Content analysis: comparing the content of different policies
Prediction analysis: Based on existing Chinese population and labour force databases, the analysis is used to forecast the number of flexibly employed people over the next 5-10 years and to make recommendations for policy improvements.
