For traditional art historians, there is a persistent prejudice against “Gothic”

For traditional art historians, there is a persistent prejudice against “Gothic” art in 14th century France and a preference towards the revolutionary narrative art developing in Italy, particularly the work of Giotto. But we know that there are actually some continuities between art from the two countries. (1) Begin by choosing one work of art from 14th century France. Identify it by using the title in italics and the date it was created.
(2) Discuss the way that the artist engages with the idea of “naturalism”. Where does the work of art succeed in appearing naturalistic? Where does the work of art face challenges in appearing naturalistic? Next turn your attention to Giotto. (3) How does the concept of “naturalism” appear in Vasari’s early biography of Giotto (included in your images)? USE A DIRECT QUOTE. (4) Next, turn your attention to Professor Stubblebine’s article on Giotto’s Arena Chapel (the outside reading). What argument does Professor Stubblebine make in his article about Giotto’s responsibilities for the Arena Chapel? (hint: if you watched the lecture answering this will be easy).
(5) Using a direct quote from the article and SPECIFIC DETAILS from the paintings, describe the way that Giotto’s “one overriding intention with the Arena Chapel was to tell a story”. How does this make his artwork different from the artistic programs in France during the same period? https://www.loom.com/share/283665fc6761488781a4820…
