ENGL 2360 Presentations on Longman/One World/ The Whale Rider
This assessment is worth 50 points or 5% of your overall grade. Presentation on chapters from Longman/One World/ The Whale Rider
During this semester, you will be required to make one presentation to the rest of the class from the course texts. The purpose of your presentation is to communicate the information from the chapters in the course text to the rest of the class. Your presentation should focus on the weekly study topic, providing examples from the course text (eg, Week 2, our topic is The Art of the Manifesto, week 3 is Modernist Memory, week 4 is Poetry About Poetry etc). Everyone is expected to read the chapters/readings, but this is your opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of that particular writer and subject matter. You should explain the information using your own words and ideas. You can do this via powerpoint, video, etc.
Purpose
The purpose of the presentation is also to enable you to develop confidence in discussing other writers – their purpose and style, their intended audience and the effect their work might have on that audience and, crucially, your own opinions about the chapters, the poem, essay or story, and the writer you have selected. Did the piece inspire you to write, or make you think? Try to give examples – how and why.
Each presentation must contain:
A brief introduction explaining the poem/essay/story and topic you will be discussing
What the writer’s purpose was in these writing
A description of his/her style
Anything that particularly stood out for you in reading the poem/essay/story – words, images, phrases, use of language, narrator, description (provide specific examples from the text)
Any ideas / inspiration the piece gave you and how it connects to your own life
What was successful in the poem/essay/story and why
What was unsuccessful, or missing
Impact on the audience (reader)
Your presentation should:
Be 5-8 minutes in length if a video
If a powerpoint 10-16 slides (not including sources)
Be well organized, prepared and structured
Be well researched
