Exercise Activity 4
Bottom of Form A network diagram is a visual representation of network architecture. It maps out the structure of a network with a variety of different symbols and line connections. It is the ideal way to share the layout of a network because the visual presentation makes it easier for users to understand how items are connected. This exercise will give you hands-on knowledge in network map making, which is an important skill to acquire. Your choice of drawing a map can be based upon your home network, a small business network, or a fictitious network that contains all the necessary elements to work properly. Be sure to consider network security in your design. Complete Hands-On Activity 6A titled “Network Design Software” found on page 180 in your textbook, or as an alternative, create a network map using an online drawing tool (SmartDraw) located at smartdraw.com.
After building a network map using the design software or design tool located at smartdraw.com, you must save a copy of their map (export as jpg or using a screen capture tool), along with a brief (200-300 word) summary of their map contents, to the discussion area listed for this week. It is recommended that a Word document be created and page 1 used for the summary information, followed by an embedded graphic image of the network map on page 2.
Note: This activity must be completed prior to starting Discussion 4.
Discussion 4
Bottom of Form In order to complete this discussion, you need to have completed Exercise 4. Post your deliverables (files and results) as attachments to this discussion post.
Read and respond to at least two other students’ submissions for this topic providing meaningful feedback to their posting.
Does the network you are reviewing use any type of identifiable security, such as a firewall? If not, what would you recommend?
Does the network contain mixed operating systems, such as Windows, Apple, and Linux? If so, what are the challenges?
What other devices are shown? (Printers, multi-function devices, etc.)
