Evaluating Student Learning Discussion – Description

For the first evaluation tool, I would have the student present on the selected learning material. By presenting, it ensures that the student is reviewing the material, performing their research, and learning the topic in depth to present the information. The quality of the presentation will display their knowledge on the topic. The next strategy would be for the student to do a in person validation on the skill that they have presented about. This would allow for the student to display that they understand the need for the skill and would show the educator that they can perform the skill. Lastly, have the student show their classmates how to do the skill in person. If the student is able to effectively show the students, it shows that the student is understands the skill and the need for the skill. The students have to not just know how to do a skill but they have to understand the rationale behind it. This will allow for the student nurses to enhance their learning experience and become competent nurses. These align with my personal philosophy of teaching as the students are able to not just memorize the skill but to truly understand the topic and why the skill needs to be performed. This will allow for the student to be able to teach others as well.Post#2 – Orlando Clinical performance is constantly being observed by the clinical instructor. The clinical instructor should make a point of assuring that time is well distributed amongst the students to properly observe and evaluate. Observation, analysis, and feedback are the main function of clinical instructors (Billings & Halstead, 2016). As a clinical instructor myself, I ensure that I round on students multiple times throughout the day to ensure that they are on task in the clinical setting and show them that they are supported by me. I assist with skills and any questions that they may have.Written communication is evaluated with written assignments. Students are able to organize and clarify their understanding of the patient by writing it down (Billings & Halstead, 2016). Written assignments for my students consist of weekly nursing process worksheets and two clinical judgement plans throughout the course. These assignments are evaluated and graded. These assignments teach the students how to navigate a patient’s chart to obtain information and formulate a plan of care.Oral communication is also important to the profession. There are countless situations where a nurse is required to present patient information to a different discipline to collaborate and come up with a plan tailored to each patient. This evaluation strategy allows the student to present what information they have gathered and know how the plan of care is being adjusted throughout the hospitalization. Students present information at clinical conference toward the end of the day.
