The Structure of Opinions

Please read this classically structured article first. After reading the Register article, notice the Classical Pattern that structures the argument. These ideas are very carefully crafted into an organization.

This structure is a good one to help students develop their critical stance. Sometimes structure pushes our thinking.  While a traditional essay is a good strategy, this classical pattern might be an even better strategy in some of your courses.

Possible Positions

Position: The West should reconsider the use of QR codes.

Support

Paragraphs 6-10, starting with “Almost all of these QR Codes connect back to WeChat . . .”

–QR codes are used by the most successful messenger app in China.

–The WeChat app has excellent scanning algorithms, overcoming the problems that the QR system had in the West.

–The West gave up on QR too soon.

–In the West we think that smartphones are small PCs, so we use them differently and don’t see the potential.

–Not using QR codes makes us seem like country “hicks from the boonies.”

Counter-arguments

Paragraph 11, starting with “Though it may be difficult to resurrect a technology that’s been so roundly declared dead  . . .”

It is difficult to resurrect a technology, but it is worth doing.

Conclusion

Paragraph 12, starting with “We can decide to make QR codes fast and painless to use with our smartphones . . .”

We should rethink QR codes and create better algorithms and user interfaces.  We can learn to love them like the Chinese do.
