ENGL 1320 University of Northampton Sample Research Essays Discussion – Description
Read the following sections from CEL in preparation for this discussion:
Sample Research Essay: Peck, “A World Made of Pixels” in CEL Ch. 16, p. 490-495
Sample Research Essay: Angel, “Graveyard Shifts” in CEL Ch. 16, p. 504-515
Now that we have considered all of the individual building blocks or “ingredients” for writing an essay that addresses a relevant cultural or social issue, we turn in this discussion toward examining ways that other student writers have responded to this task. As you read the two sample essays in CEL Ch. 16, think about how the two writers address the issues they have chosen to write about: the effects of the workplace environment on “graveyard shift” workers (Angel) and the consequences of overexposure to photo technology (Peck).
Assignment :
Write a short initial post in which you use the questions below to compare and contrast the essays above:
Overall, how did the essays appeal to you as an audience? Did both essays interest you in the issues they were addressing?
Use the four basic “ingredients” of arguments to evaluate Peck’s and Angel’s essays against one another. Do both essays have revelatory, arguable thesis statements? How does each essay present support for its main claims? How do both writers counterargue, concede, and address other perspectives?
