ENGL 1320 UN English Evaluating a Sample Synthesis Discussion – Description
Evaluating a Sample Synthesis
compass icon-01.png Overview :
Read the following sections in preparation for this assignment:
Crockett, “Exploring Caffeine Views,” CEL Ch. 15, p.452-454.
“Analysis” in CEL Ch. 9, p. 285-288
We are working in this unit towards the goal of writing a synthesis, which the CEL explains as literally meaning “bringing together” (p.448). Writers often use synthesis within longer essays or even books to show that they understand and can make connections within the existing “conversation” surrounding an issue.
As Ch.15 in CEL explains, you may find when you research that you “do not find any sources that share [your] position on a specific topic” (446). Synthesizing can help you to make connections between these different sources by “bringing a range of voices and texts together” (448).
quill icon-01.png Assignment :
For this activity, respond to the following questions about the Sample Synthesis provided in the CEL Ch. 15 : Crockett, “Exploring Caffeine Views” (p. 452-454)
What specific sources does Crockett attempt to synthesize? List a few titles and writers.
How does Crockett use synthesis to make connections between the sources? If synthesis is a way of “formulating the relationships among sources” and “bridg[ing] gaps between and among sources,” how specifically does Crockett go about synthesizing?
Write a response.
