Assignment
Compose four (4) poems* of your own. Keep in mind concrete language in whatever you write! Choose from
this list of possibilities. You MUST have a TITLE for each poem and tell WHICH of these choices you are
responding to at the top of the page with the title. Also, please watch the video posted in the unit prior to
completing this assignment.

1. (From Quiz #2) Complete your poem that you believe captures your personal American experience
based on your quiz draft. Try not to use clichés.
2. (From Quiz #2) Complete your poem that captures a struggle. Think of this poem as a snapshot of the
experience. It can be fictional or based on a real struggle. The struggle can range from simple struggles
like getting up in the morning to more complex ones like potty training a child to very complex ones like
facing violence. It can be based on your quiz draft.
3. Create your own Haiku series. Some great examples of Haiku are found here http://www.hsa-

4. Create a Prose poem. There are some great examples of published Prose poems found here
http://digitalcommons.providence.edu/prosepoem/ Note that prose poems are written in paragraph
format.
5. Write a poem that fits with the theme of one of the following poetry movements in history. You will
need to look up general information about the movement to get an idea of what the writers focused on:
Romantic poetry, Transcendental Poetry, Harlem Renaissance, The Beat Movement
6. Write a poem that is set your own tune (song lyrics). Be aware that a lot of published songs, even some
very commercially successful songs, are not rich in concrete imagery. Your song should be. Here is an example of a song that has great lyrics by 2016 Nobel Prize of Literature winner Bob Dylan (the first songwriter to ever win) https://youtu.be/MMFj8uDubsE
7. Do whatever! Yes, whatever! Poetry is wide open for creativity and interpretation. If what you are
trying to do or trying to convey does not fit with 1-6, that is fine. Just be sure there is substantial
substance for your reader. Also, be aware that I will want to see punctuation in it based on the video
instructions in the unit
