Leadership skills are the traits possessed by effective educational leaders to inspire action and optimism. A leader’s style is shaped by a variety of factors, including personality, values, skills, and experiences, and can have a significant impact on the effectiveness of their leadership. Effective leaders are supportive of those around them and provide inspiration to achieve individual and collective goals. One type of leadership I have observed and worked under is instructional leadership. Instructional leadership is most commonly associated with principals. Principals often strive to empower teachers to become leaders themselves, distributing the weight of the school’s responsibilities more equitably and providing a model of teamwork for students to look up to. O’Shea (2021) explains that empowering educators allows them to make decisions that they believe will better serve their students. Another style of leadership I am familiar with is servant. The servant-leader is servant first. This type of leadership begins with the natural feeling of wanting to serve. Servant leaders see the best in everyone and try build on hope for the future with empathy and compassion. Canavesi & Minelli (2021) discuss that servant leaders highest priority is service to others in order to fulfill their needs, rather than fulfilling his or her personal needs. There are other leadership styles that I believe will still be encouraged depending on the area and situation such as authoritarian leadership. Although I am not fond of this type of leadership, others work well under it. Most leaders adapt their leadership styles to suit their situation.
