Discussion Thread: What You Have Learned
What You Have Learned
Over the last eight weeks, this course has offered much information that has impacted my overall impression of research. Initially, my thoughts on research were simply the idea of gathering information to educate oneself on a particular topic. This definition is still workable, although it involves much more than just educating. I have learned that my bias, personal experiences, and current cultural environment play a significant part in the way I conduct research. In addition, my personal experiences and training influence my research approach (Creswell & Creswell, 2018, p. 19). Moreover, I have learned that in order to be the most proficient researcher, I must be cognizant of these. I may have a preferred research design, quantitative, but I should be open to the benefits of research as a whole.
Role of Faith/Spirituality
I have been very outspoken about the role that faith plays in research. As a believer, my faith sets the foundation for my life. Every aspect of my life is or should be, shaped by my relationship with Christ and the truth found in Scripture,
According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:10-11)
If Christians believe that Scripture is a vital part of their lives, they should see their faith’s role in research. Paul reminds us, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17). Whether it be research, work, or our conversations, faith is interwoven into how we interact with the world around us.
Learning Experiences and Insights
During this course, I learned the importance of research as a whole and that it is manageable. One specific experience that I will utilize moving forward is the synthesis of literature. I found this process extremely beneficial, especially when applying it to Scripture. How that process pulls out the precise details of the similarities and differences of varying accounts of the Scriptures is edifying. Overall, the information surrounding qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research has helped broaden my knowledge of research and how to apply it.

What have you learned in this class that has yielded the most significant transformation in your thoughts and/or understanding about research in general and research design (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods) in particular?
I also learned the difference between qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. I understood more about research design and sample populations (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). I learned that a qualitative research design explores individuals and groups to understand social, political, and human problems (Creswell, 2018). I enjoyed learning about qualitative research. In comparison, quantitative research explores the testing of theories by utilizing survey and experimental research (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). Mixed methods research uses a combination of both.
What role (if any) do you think faith/spirituality should play in research?
At times I struggled to understand how faith plays a role in research. Faith plays a role, especially in ethical research. If a person is practicing biblical principles, they will be honest in their research findings and report the correct findings even if it does not support the outcomes they were hoping for.
What learning experiences (readings, assignments, presentations, etc) contributed most significantly to your learning and why?
Honestly, I was surprised at how much I learned during this course. First, having one textbook to read during the 8-week session was refreshing. I know this is doctorate level, but usually, having four to six textbooks per course can be overwhelming, allowing for the assignments and having outside responsibilities. I have purchased all these textbooks that I need to re-read after completing my degree because I have been unable to focus on the content. I can engage in reading during this course.
I also enjoyed the discussion posts. What supported my learning was that there was a pre-set of questions to answer. It helped me identify what was important and guided my learning. It helped me focus and build on the different types of designs, worldviews, outcomes, and literature reviews.
What insights have you gleaned in this class that you might continue to think about and/or investigate in the future?
This course assisted me in building my critical thinking skills and understanding of how research is conducted. If I chose to proceed and to obtain my Doctor of Education, I would better understand research, and some of the apprehension would be taken away.
