Drawing Materials and Processes Discussion – Description

Chapter 6 (1 of 2)

When you look at these two drawings notice how greatly they differ. Think about what you learned about how different drawing materials work.

a) What drawing materials and processes are most likely used for each of these two drawings? Explain what you saw in each drawing to make those decisions.

b) Compare and contrast these drawing media and how they are each worked to achieve the artist desired form. (not concerned with abstract or natural approach the artist might have taken – what to write about the materials and processes)

Chapter 6 (2 of 2)

Drawing — answer questions separately

a) Drawing is the beginning and foundation of the other art processes. A painting is sketched out before paint touches the canvas. When carving stone the sculptor will draw out his desired form so he will know where to cut and what area of stone to leave. With that being said look though your textbook and see how many drawings are in your book outside of this chapter. Look for drawing media like charcoal, pencil, conte, or pastel. Give me the general count on how many drawing you find in your book.

b) Noticing how few actual drawings are in your book, can drawing be more than a starting point, can a drawing be a final work of art? Explain your response. Pick two artworks from another chapter to support andexplain in detail. Finding your own art examples shows you understand material. (Do not just list art)
Chapter 7 (1 of 2)

When you look at these two paintings of New Orleans architecture notice how the paint looks so different. Remember what you learned about how different paint materials work and what the final finish can look like.

a) What paint media was most likely used for each painting? Explain what you saw to make those decisions.

b) Compare and contrast the materials used in each and how they are worked to achieve the artist desired form. Why do they appear so different — look at the materials and application of materials.

Chapter 7 (2 of 2 )

Think about what you learned about the different paint media and surfaces they get applied to. Which is most likely to be used to make this large scale mural.

a) What paint media was most likely used for this mural panting? Explain what you saw to make this decision.

b) Why this paint medium over the others?

c) In your own words explain this paint process. Find two other paintings from different chapters in your book that are also this paint medium. Identify the art title, artist and what page in your textbook it is located.

Chapter 8 (1 of 2)

When you look at these two prints of New Orleans architecture notice how greatly they differ. Recall what you learned about the different printmaking processes and how they look when applied to a surface.

a) What printmaking processes are most likely used for each print? Explain what you saw to make those decisions.

b) Compare and contrast the print media used and how they are each worked to achieve the artist desired form. (not concerned with abstract or natural approach the artist might have taken – looking at materials and processes)

Chapter 8 (2 of 2)

Answer each question separately

1. a) Students first learning about printmaking often mistake it as a way to make a copy of a painting to sell cheaper and do not realize the full potential of this medium. As you now know printmaking is a serious art form and unique media that draws artists’ interest and creative process. When you look over this medium what do think these artist are drawn to in it and why?

b) Look throughout your textbook and find five artist that are serious printmaking artists. Identify these five artist and which printmaking processes they predominately used.

2. Defend printmaking as an original art medium:

a) There are “easier” process to undertake to create an image so why one of these?

b) Prints sell for less than a painting or sculpture so why use one of these processes?

c) You get multiple images so how is that original art? Explain your answer.

d) You call something the artist didn’t even work on the art – how does that work?

e) Explain how art prints differ from commercial prints. Identify at least five ways art prints are different than commercial / manufactured prints like posters and signs?
