Hemingway/Setting
Initial Post: 200-300 words by Wednesday
In this discussion you will examine the role that setting plays in Hemingway’s short story ″Hills Like White Elephants.″ Discuss the location of the story and how you feel both characters react and respond to the setting. How does it make them feel uncomfortable, and how does it reflect something of the situation in which they find themselves? Also, consider how another setting might have altered the story. How would these characters have interacted in a seaside town, for example? How about if they were sitting at an outside café in a busy city?
Posts 2-3: Minimum 200 words total for each response (due Friday)
In response to the posts of classmates, provide feedback on setting as it is presented in Hemingway’s short story and how the classmate feels an alternative setting would alter the story. How do you feel this new location would alter the story? How would this new location have altered your reading of the story, including your perception of the characters?
