One of the major problems for the development of advanced practice nursing (APN) is regulatory restrictions. These constraints are reflected in diverse forms, including the lack of scope of practice, rigid licensing requirements, and inadequate prescriptions (Saunders, 2014). Such regulations not only limit the capability of APNs to deliver consistent care but also produce innumerable adversities in practice from one jurisdiction to another. To overcome this challenge, legislative and regulatory reform through advocacy is needed (Kunic, 2013). APNs can lead to the involvement of professional organizations and other healthcare stakeholders in policy campaigns aimed at expanding the scope of practice, facilitating the licensure process, and removing the barriers to full prescriptive authority. Furthermore, life-long learning and professional accreditation are important in proving the capability and professionalism of APNs, which helps them lobby for regulatory reforms.

Since 2020, at the start of COVID-19, we have seen some changes. Massachusetts has since become an FPA state in Arkansas is on its way as well. There have been some other changes that affect reimbursement and the nurse practitioner’s authority. In the state of Arkansas, a nurse practitioner can now be designated as a primary care provider. They will also now be reimbursed through Medicaid programs. When it comes to the federal level, CMS has since removed some of the barriers to the nurse practitioners practice since COVID-19 pandemic has begun. Nurse practitioners are now allowed to provide more medical services in skilled nursing facilities. They are all also now able to do tele-health visits in long-term care facilities (Kleinpell et al., 2023)
