CSULB Microbiology Types of Immunity & Microbial Diseases Papers – Description

Part 1: Last week, you learned about the ways in which our immune system protects us from pathogens. In this week’s assignment, you will review the third line of defense, which is provided by specific or adaptive defense mechanisms. These mechanisms are triggered by a specific antigen. This week’s “Tell the Story” will allow you to review these defense mechanisms.

For this week’s assignment, you will:
Watch the following video: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/humaL-biology/immunology/v/types-of-immune-responses-innate-and-adaptive-humoral-vs-cell-mediated
Then, write a brief summary of what you have learned by watching the video and why this is significant. Your summary should describe cell-mediated immunity, antibody-mediated immunity, active immunity, and passive immunity.

Part 2: There are many types of skin infections caused by different organisms. Microbial diseases of the skin can be the result of a break in the skin that allows a microorganism to enter the body, a systemic infection that manifests itself in the skin, or toxin-mediated skin damage due to the production of microbial toxins at a site in the body distant from the point of the original infection.

There are three categories of skin, soft tissue, or musculoskeletal infections discussed in your textbook:

Bacterial Infections

Viral Infections
Fungal Infections

For this part, address the following criteria in your main response:
Choose ONE of the infections or pathogens listed in your textbook.
Describe the pathogen(s) associated with the disease, the mechanism of pathogenicity (how the pathogen leads to disease), the common signs and symptoms of the disorder, and the treatment for the infection.
Then, provide a case study highlighting your chosen disorder. Ask your peers to help you diagnose the disease! Please ensure that you check the discussion frequently to see if your peers have reached the correct diagnosis.
Include any interesting information you find while researching this infection.
