As you have learned, immunization against microorganisms has been an essential component in disease prevention. Scientists have developed a variety of vaccines against a large number of pathogens. This week’s discussion will focus on vaccination against influenza viruses.
Address the following criteria in your main response to this week’s discussion:
Please review the discussion of influenza in Chapter 15 of your textbook. Then, read the following article from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/vaccinations.htm
After you read the article, address the following questions. What is influenza?
What causes influenza?
What are some of the impacts of the influenza viruses on the body?
What is the difference between influenza and the common cold?
How does the flu vaccine work?
Who should get vaccinated? Who should not get vaccinated?
Why are some people in support of vaccinations and others not?
Include any interesting information you find while researching this infection.
Be sure to add at least one reference (using APA) which exemplifies where you learned about the material.

In this part, you will be introduced to the resources provided by the American Society of Microbiology. This organization provides articles, webinars, podcasts, and a number of other resources related to the field of microbiology.
For this week’s assignment, you will:
Access the podcasts from the American Society of Microbiology at http://www.asm.org/podcasts
Select and listen to ONE recent podcast in any of the categories listed, but preferably one related to respiratory or skin disorders.
Identify the title of the podcast you listened to and paste the URL (web address) of the podcast that you selected.
Then, summarize the major points made during the podcast, highlighting the key concepts discussed. Please include at least 10 specific things you learned while listening to the podcast.
