Directions:
Create a PowerPoint (12-15 slides) for your genetic case study that outlines the findings from Parts I and II of the genetics case study. For the final part, investigate the ethical and privacy aspects related to the selected genetic disorder and present a proposed plan for genetic counseling.
For the presentation of your PowerPoint, use Zoom to create a voice-over or a video (15-20 minutes). Refer to the topic Resources for additional guidance on recording your presentation with Zoom. Include an additional slide for the Zoom link at the beginning and an additional slide for References at the end.
Include the following in your presentation:
- Introduction of selected genetic disorder. Include its prevalence, incidence, and the causes of the disorder in terms of its origin as either a single gene inheritance or as a complex inheritance.
- The analysis of the gene mutation of the disease and based on your analysis, whether it is acquired or inherited, how the mutation occurs, what genetic testing is available, and how the tests are used to identify or treat the disease.
- An explanation for how today’s health care policies influence how a patient can obtain genetic testing or subsequent screenings and how policy influences the selected genetic disorder.
- The societal, cultural, and environmental influences for the cause of this disease.
- The process a patient may go through as it relates to the selected genetic disease (nutritional assessment and counseling as it relates to health, prevention, screening, diagnostics, prognostics, selection of treatment, and monitoring of treatment effectiveness, etc.).
- Other preventative measures that can be used to help prevent the genetic disorder from occurring and how the suggested preventative measures could potentially change the prevalence rates, testing, treatment, and prognosis.
- Discussion of an identified ethical dilemma arising in medical genetics associated with this disease. A proposed plan to mitigate the ethical dilemma identified.
- The legal protections for genetic information in place for patients with the genetic disorder.
- Privacy issues for family members in a family history that may arise.
- Explanation of what constitutes adequate evidence of the DNP-prepared nurse’s duty to warn the patient’s family and what permissions might be obtained.
- Create a plan for how you might provide genetic counselling to the patient and family.
