Confidentiality Scenario 1
Avery is in a second grade inclusive elementary classroom.  He has moderate intellectual disabilities and his speech is difficult to understand.  During literacy block, students are working in groups of three.  The teacher is working with one group at a time while the paraprofessional, Mr. Jackson, monitors the rest of the students, providing assistance with needed.  Using language that is developmentally appropriate, Mr. Jackson approaches Avery’s group and begins to tell the students without disabilities Avery’s instructional goals for reading.  The children seem pleased to know Avery’s goals and are intent on helping him reach those goals in their small group.  Mr. Jackson does not mention the gaols of any other group members.
Has the paraprofessional broken any rules about confidentiality?  If so, which ones?  What could he have done differently?
Confidentiality Scenario 2
Mrs. Franks is a well-respected paraprofessional at the middle school.  She works with the seventh-grade team to support a variety of students with and without disabilities.  As she is walking down the hallway, she overhears a conversation about a specific student and his family.  The hushed tone of the conversation make Mrs. Franks uncomfortable.  Before she knows it, one person involved in the conversation asks Mrs. Franks if the information is true about the student and his family.
Have any rules of confidentiality been broken?  If so, which ones?  How should Mrs. Franks respond?
Confidentiality Scenario 3
Dolores is a paraprofessional who supports several students who have challenging behavior at the local school.  She has been a paraprofessional for many years.  Dolores is widely known in her community for her volunteer work at the local youth center.  One of the students who Dolores supports attends the youth center regularly.  One afternoon at the youth center, Dolores notices that the student is beginning to have some difficulty managing some of his behaviors.  Dolores has learned several behavioral management techniques to support this student in school.
What should Dolores do?  Should she intervene at the youth center with the behavioral management techniques that she learned at school?  Why or why not?
