Children Development Discussion Reply – Description
After conducting much research, I have found that gifted children are somewhat seen to be social misfits all the while actually striving to fit in socially as sometimes it is hard, due to them not being like everyone else (Rizza & Morrison, 2003). The characteristics given for gifted children within the article I explored explained that these children take risks, are nonconforming, seek teacher approval, question rules, and they want to belong socially (Rizza & Morrison, 2003). Gifted children often have issues becoming friends or relating to their non-gifted peers, due to gifted children experiencing cognitive dissonance much earlier than their same-aged peers, social issues are experienced(Guthrie, 2019). Research has shown that children who experience giftedness experience social challenges, these challenges are making friends, listening to rules, all around fitting into the ‘norm’(Guthrie, 2019).
If I were a guidance counselor working with these students and their parents I would first, be completely understanding. Growing up I went to a very helpful school, I went to school with a lot of gifted children, and due to my school having a certain image many helped these children as best as they could. Many students who were gifted were in gifted programs as well as skipping grades when necessary. I believe I would tell these parents to find outlets, and teaching practices that could be incorporated into this child’s everyday education to help them stay on track, I would push helping the student within the school thoroughly to ensure a fair and unbiased education career and experience for that child being that they may or may not be moving up grades or simply adjusting to being a gifted student trying to fit in amongst students they may feel they have nothing in common with. Skipping grades does not always turn out great for the student though, I know this from personal experience, one girl growing up skipped a grade she was gifted but completely unprepared as the help was not in place for her, and she ultimately spiraled.
