Auburn University Main Campus Public Health Systemic Text Condensation Paper – Description

Systemic Text Condensation is a common theory used in qualitative methods research. Most qualitative health research is based in focus groups or interviews, but there are many other ways that you can utilize this resource. We communicate in all kinds of ways – the music we listen to, the books we read, the social media we consume. For this week, you’ll be completing a base-level qualitative analysis on a topic that is NOT related to healthcare or public health in any way. The intention is to learn the method and its widespread uses. For this assignment, you’ll find three (minimum) pieces of media that you are personally interested in. This can be (but is not limited to): Songs from your favorite artist (Have you ever wanted to do a course assignment about Kendrick Lamar or Taylor Swift? Here’s your chance)Scenes from your favorite movie or book Episodes of a podcast or tv show Social media posts about a similar topic (I KNOW we’ve all been following the OceanGate tragedy) Your grouping should be thematically relevant, as in, if you’re picking songs, pick songs about one topic. Follow the structure of the method in the Malterud article and write a 250-word minimum post detailing the trends you saw using the method, showing as much of your work as possible. Then, describe one thing you learned about your source material that you wouldn’t have otherwise known, and one thing that you struggled with when doing this research. As a side note: While this assignment may seem laissez-faire, this kind of qualitative research is widespread in fields like psychology, communication sciences, American studies, and sociology. Think about the ways we can learn about culture from this type of research and check out this analysis of slang in Lil Nas X’s Montero album as an example – https://eprints.unmas.ac.id/id/eprint/1867/Links to an external site. As always, supplemental articles are optional!
