ASU FDA Importance of Risk Management and Supply Chain Policies Paper – Description
An article from APICS Magazine is included at the end of this document. We have seen numerous products recalled in recent years across several different industries. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has several classes of recalls for consumer products (outlined in the article). Recall Classifications These guidelines categorize all recalls into one of three classes according to the level of hazard involved:
Class I: Dangerous or defective products that predictably could cause serious health problems or death. Examples include: food found to contain botulinum toxin, food with undeclared allergens, a label mix-up on a lifesaving drug, or a defective artificial heart valve.
• Class II: Products that might cause a temporary health problem, or pose only a slight threat of a serious nature. Example: a drug that is under-strength but that is not used to treat life-threatening situations.
• Class III: Products that are unlikely to cause any adverse health reaction, but that violate FDA labeling or manufacturing laws. Examples include: a minor container defect and lack of English labeling in a retail food. For this case study, please address the following areas for Food Product recalls that occurred in the month of May 2023:
• Please provide a summary of all the Food Product recalls in May 2023.
• Please select three recalled food products from the list of recalled products and describe the likely impact on customers and the recalling firms: o One product for a Class I recall o One product for a Class II recall o One product for a Class III recall
• How would you recommend each firm develop a risk management plan utilizing Artificial Intelligence and Workforce Development? Please provide a specific plan for each product.
Assume each product moves through a distribution center to reach a retailer or customer. How can a warehouse management system be used to facilitate each recall?
Describe how at least two megatrends from the first chapter can be used to prevent or manage product recalls in the future
